MTT Poker Strategy — What MTT Means, ICM and Final Tables

The 4 stages of a tournament — each with its own strategy

The biggest mistake MTT players make is playing every stage of the tournament with the same style. A winning player knows how to identify the stage and adapt.

    • Early Stage — deep stacks (100BB+), play solid, build an image
    • Mid Stage — antes kick in, stacks 30-50BB, widen your opening range
    • Late Stage / Bubble — 10-25BB, ICM is critical, pressure medium stacks
    • Final Table — every decision is worth tens of thousands of dollars, ICM on steroids

Stack management — M-Ratio and effective stack

In MTTs your stack constantly shrinks relative to the blinds. M-Ratio = Stack / (SB+BB+Antes). M above 20 = normal play. M of 10 = "yellow zone" — pressure. M below 6 = "push or fold" time.

Bubble play — where tournaments are won or lost

The bubble is the moment right before the money. This is where ICM (Independent Chip Model) peaks: every chip is worth more to lose than to win. Weak players fold everything — attack their blinds relentlessly. Strong players call carefully only in empty zones.

ICM — the chip value model

ICM is a mathematical formula that converts your chip stack into a monetary value based on the payout structure. Practical meaning: a 50/50 all-in in a cash game is zero EV. The same all-in at a final table is negative EV for the payout ladder, because losing "costs" more than winning is worth in real value.

5 mistakes that kill MTT players

Even experienced players repeat these mistakes — especially in the late stage.

    • Keeping a short stack instead of pushing (getting blinded out)
    • Ignoring opponents’ stack sizes on the bubble
    • Attacking the big stack on the bubble instead of the mid stack
    • Calling a short stack’s all-in with 65% equity at the final table
    • Tilting after a bad beat — a tournament is a marathon, not a sprint

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is M-Ratio and why does it matter?
M-Ratio = your stack / (small blind + big blind + antes). It tells you how many rounds you can survive without playing a hand. M<10 = danger zone, M<6 = mandatory push/fold.
Why is a 50/50 all-in bad in an MTT?
Because of ICM. Losing in the late stage removes 100% of your equity in the tournament. Winning only adds part of it — usually 50%-70% of the chip value. That’s why a 50/50 all-in is negative EV in real value.
Where can you play MTTs in Hebrew?
On PokerClub.co.il there are closed tournaments for club members, weekly freerolls, and full access to GGPoker’s major MTTs (WSOP Online, Bounty Hunters, GGMasters).
