Bluffing in Poker — The Art of Making Opponents Fold

Bluffing isn't just throwing chips and hoping for the best. A profitable bluff is a consistent story across streets that makes the opponent believe you have a stronger hand than theirs. Here we'll cover the different types of bluffs (Pure Bluff, Semi-Bluff, Blocker Bluff), when bluffs work, how to calculate bluff odds (Bluff-to-Value Ratio), and the three most costly mistakes amateurs make.

    4 Types of Bluff

    • Pure Bluff: you have nothing, and you\'re betting on the opponent to fold.
    • Semi-Bluff: you\'re on a Draw (Flush/Straight) — if the opponent folds: you win now. If they call: you have equity to make the hand. Pot odds calculation.
    • Blocker Bluff: you hold a card that blocks the opponent\'s strong hand (e.g., A♠ on a 3-spade board — the opponent is less likely to have the Nut Flush).
    • Overbet Bluff: Bet of 150-200% of the pot. Represents only Nuts or Air. Controls the opponent\'s entire range.

The Formula: When Is a Bluff Profitable?

A bluff into a pot of P with Bet of B must succeed at least: B / (P + B) of the time.

    Practical examples:

    • Half-pot bet (50%) → must succeed 33% of the time
    • Full pot bet (100%) → must succeed 50% of the time
    • Overbet 200% → must succeed 67% of the time

See? An Overbet Bluff must work ⅔ of the time — so it\'s used only when the opponent\'s range is very weak.

Triple Barrel Bluff — When to Fire 3 Streets?

Triple Barrel is a bluff on flop, turn, and river. Works only when: (1) the story is credible (Board changes in your favor), (2) the opponent can fold (not a Fish Calling Station), (3) you have Blockers to their strong hand. Classic example: open from CO, C-Bet on a dry flop, Barrel on a turn that brings a scare card (Overcard or possible Flush), and Overbet on the river with a Blocker. See also C-Bet.

3 Mistakes That Turn a Bluff Into a Certain Loss

    1. Bluffing Fish. Amateurs don\'t fold. Bluffing them = donation.
    2. Inconsistent story. Check-Call on flop then Overbet on river = "obvious bluff".
    3. Bluffing Multiway. Against 3+ opponents someone always has a hand. Don\'t bluff.

Bluff Catcher and MDF — When You Must Call

A Bluff Catcher is a medium hand that only beats bluffs. To know when you must call so the opponent can\'t bluff freely, use the MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) formula: MDF = P / (P + B), where P is the pot before the bet and B is the bet size.

Example: pot 100, opponent bets 100 (full pot). MDF = 100/(100+100) = 50%. You must call at least 50% of the range you reached this street with, otherwise the opponent can bluff any hand and profit automatically.

    Numerical Example: Real Bluff EV

    Pot 60, you consider a bluff of 40 (⅔ pot). Opponent folds 45% of the time. EV = (0.45 × 60) − (0.55 × 40) = 27 − 22 = +5. The bluff is profitable because it only needs to work 40% (40/100) to break even, and the opponent folds more than that. If the opponent only folded 30% — EV would be negative: (0.30 × 60) − (0.70 × 40) = 18 − 28 = -10, and Check would be better.
