Five Card Draw Poker — Complete Rules and Strategy

Five Card Draw is the oldest and simplest poker variant: every player receives five private cards, exchanges the ones they do not want, and the best five-card hand wins. It is the game most people picture when they think "poker", and it is the perfect starting point before moving to Texas Hold'em.

    The short answer

Five hole cards, one draw round, best hand wins

Everyone gets 5 cards, bets, may exchange up to 5, bets again and shows down. Hand rankings are identical to Texas Hold'em — royal flush highest, high card lowest.

    How a hand plays out

Blinds or antes are posted, each player receives five face-down cards, and the first betting round begins. Players who stay in then choose how many cards to discard. The dealer replaces them from the deck, a second betting round follows, and the remaining players show down.

    Drawing strategy

Keep any made hand from two pair upward and draw one card. With a single pair, discard three and draw. With four cards to a flush or an open-ended straight, draw one — but only when the pot odds justify it. Drawing three cards signals a weak hand, so experienced players sometimes draw two to disguise their holding.

Five Card Draw vs Texas Hold'em

Draw poker hides all information — you never see an opponent\'s cards until showdown, so reads come from betting patterns and draw counts. Hold\'em gives you shared community cards and four betting rounds, which creates far more strategic depth. That is why Hold\'em dominates online play, including on ClubGG.

Draw probabilities — the numbers behind the exchange

The draw is the whole game, so it helps to know the odds before you throw cards away:

    • One pair, drawing 3 — about 16.0% to make two pair, 11.4% to make trips, 0.8% for a full house and 0.3% for quads: roughly 28.5% to improve at all.
    • Four to a flush, drawing 1 — roughly 19% to complete it.
    • Open-ended straight draw, drawing 1 — roughly 17%.
    • Inside (gutshot) draw — about 8.5% only, rarely worth paying for.
    • Trips, drawing 2 — about 6.1% to a full house and about 4.3% to quads.

The simple rule: the stronger your hand already is, the fewer cards you should exchange. If it is weak, folding before the draw usually beats paying to replace three or four cards.

Home-game rules worth agreeing in advance

Home games almost always use an ante — every player posts the same small amount before the deal — rather than blinds. The dealer button moves one seat left each hand, and the player after it opens the first betting round.

Two limits are worth setting before you start: capping the draw at three cards, so a six-handed table does not run the deck dry, and capping the number of raises per round. If you would rather play a private table online than around the kitchen table, see poker with friends, and read the poker rules and hand rankings if anyone at the table is new.
