What Is GTO in Poker? Meaning, Solvers and How to Play It

GTO stands for Game Theory Optimal — a poker strategy built on Nash Equilibrium, where you play so that no opponent can exploit you even if they know exactly what you do. It is the game's perfect defense: it does not maximise profit against weak players, but it never loses to anyone. This guide covers the meaning of GTO, how solvers reach it, the MDF formula you can use at the table, and when deviating to exploit play earns more.

    What GTO Actually Is

GTO is also called Nash Equilibrium: you play in a way such that even if your opponent knew your strategy exactly, they still couldn't exploit you. It doesn't mean you win the maximum — it means you don't lose the maximum.

In other words, GTO is the perfect defensive strategy. It doesn't crush weak players for the max — but it never loses to anyone.

    How Solvers Work

Solvers like PioSolver, GTO+ and GTO Wizard take as input: hand ranges for both players, the board (Flop/Turn/River), stack sizes and bet sizes. They run iterative algorithms (CFR — Counterfactual Regret Minimization) until they reach a solution where neither side can improve by changing strategy.

The output: for every hand in the range, the solver tells you what percentage to take each action (Bet 33%, Bet 66%, Check, Fold). This is a mixed strategy.

    MDF — Minimum Defense Frequency

MDF is the most practical GTO tool at the table: it tells you how much of your range you must continue with so your opponent's bluffs aren't automatically profitable.

    Formula: MDF = 1 − (Bet / (Pot + Bet))

    Example: opponent bets 50 into 100. MDF = 1 − (50/150) = 67%. You must continue with 67% of your range so their bluffs aren't auto-print.

GTO vs Exploit — The Real Choice

    • Vs strong / unknown opponents: play GTO. Safe defense.
    • Vs a fish who folds too much: bluff more than GTO — you print.
    • Vs a station: bluff less than GTO, value-bet thinner — take value.
    • In tournaments: pure GTO fits complex ICM spots, but exploit dominates most stages.

    How to Actually Learn GTO

    • Start with Pot Odds & Equity — the math foundation of all GTO.
    • Work on standard preflop ranges by position (charts widely available).
    • Understand MDF and the alpha rule — internalize, don't memorize.
    • Solvers are the last step, not the first. Players who jumped straight to solvers without math didn't gain much.

    Real Practice

The only way to internalize GTO patterns is to play. At ClubGG Israel you can run thousands of hands across stakes, log HH, and analyze in a solver at home. Join the club and start practicing.
