How to practise poker against AI and turn it into real improvement

What actually happens at this table

The table runs a full Hold'em hand against computer opponents: deal, preflop, flop, turn and river, including bet sizing, pot odds and multi-street pot building. No real money is involved — the point is to rehearse decisions quickly and see the outcome immediately.

Opponents do not play every hand the same way; they react to bet size, the number of players in the hand and position. That forces you into spots with no single correct answer, just like a live table.

Why practising against a computer works

Poker improvement comes from repetition with fast feedback. In a money game you might play 40 hands an hour and get noisy feedback; against AI you can run many times that volume, isolate one spot (big-blind defence against a raise, for example) and repeat it until the decision becomes automatic — without paying for the lesson.

    A two-week practice plan

Week 1 — preflop. Drill opens and responses to opens only: what to open from each position, when to three-bet, when to fold marginal holdings. Judge the decision you made, not the result of the hand.

Week 2 — postflop. Focus on one street per day: flop continuation bets, reacting to check-raises, turn decisions with a draw, and which hands are genuinely worth a river bet. End each session with three hands you were unsure about and review them.

    Mistakes this practice exposes fast

Three leaks appear in almost every new player: calling far too wide preflop from the blinds, betting every flop automatically regardless of board texture, and calling the river "just to see" when the opponent's range is almost always stronger.

When you run a large number of hands in a short session those patterns stand out immediately — and you can drill the fix in the same sitting.

From practice to a real table

Once preflop decisions are fast and you notice yourself calling without a reason, move to a real low buy-in table. Start with free poker, go deeper in the poker academy, then join the club through the joining guide.

    Limitations worth knowing

Practising against a computer is excellent for building decision patterns, but it does not reproduce everything in a live game: there is no real financial pressure, no opponent history across sessions and no human timing to read. Treat it as a gym, not a substitute for real experience — and never conclude from a short run of hands that your strategy does or does not work.
