Poker Set — Complete Buying Guide for Chips, Cards and Cases

A good poker set is the difference between an amateur home game and a table that feels like a casino. This guide covers chip counts by player number, materials and weights, denominations, which cards last, and what is actually worth the money.

How many chips do you actually need?

Rule of thumb: 50-75 chips per player for cash games, 30-50 for a home tournament. A 300 set covers 6 players; 500 is the sweet spot for a regular 8-9 player game; 1000 is only needed for leagues or multi-table events.

    Material and weight

ABS (11.5g) — cheap, metal-insert plastic. Clay composite (13.5-14g) — closest to casino feel, slides well on felt. Ceramic — full-surface printing, premium, expensive. For a serious home game, 14g composite is the best value.

    Correct denominations

Home tournament with a 10,000 stack: 20x25 (white), 20x100 (red), 10x500 (green), 5x1000 (black). Cash: 1 / 5 / 25 / 100. Always keep plenty of small denominations — running out of blind-level chips is the most common home-game failure.

    Cards — plastic vs paper

Coated paper cards bend and mark after a night or two. 100% plastic cards (Copag, KEM, Modiano) cost 3-5x more but last years and can be washed. Always buy two decks in different colors so you can shuffle in parallel.

What else belongs in the set?

Dealer button, SB/BB buttons, a cut card to hide the bottom card, and a playing mat. Cheap items that dramatically raise the quality of the game.

    Physical set vs online play

A physical set wins on social experience; online wins on hand volume, statistics and no dealing work. Many of our players combine both — see the poker table guide and our weekly tournaments.
