What is Pot Odds in poker?

Pot Odds is the ratio between the amount needed to call and the size of the pot after that call is made. This ratio is compared against your probability of making the winning hand (Equity). If your chance of hitting is higher than the percentage you are being asked to risk, calling is profitable in the long run, regardless of the outcome of any single hand.

Pot is $100, opponent bets $50 — you need to call $50 into a $150 pot, meaning you need 25% equity. If your equity is above 25%, calling is correct.

Pot Odds (Pot Odds) belongs to the Strategy group of poker terms and shows up in almost every hand of Texas Hold'em. If you are starting out, read the poker rules and the hand rankings first, then come back here. To practise risk-free you can play against our AI right on the site.

The minimum equity that makes a call break even is required equity = call / (pot before call + bet + call) — what you pay divided by the final pot your call creates.

• Pot 100, bet 50, call 50 — 50 / 200 = 25%. You need to win at least a quarter of the time.
• Pot 120, bet 30, call 30 — 30 / 180 = 16.7%. A small bet lowers the bar sharply.

A 9-out flush draw improves roughly 19% of the time on the single next card; an 8-out open-ended straight draw roughly 17%. So against a half-pot bet (25% bar) neither draw pays for itself on immediate odds alone, while against a quarter-pot bet (16.7% bar) the flush draw clears the bar and the open-ender sits right on it.

Note what this calculation does not include: implied odds (extra money you win when you hit), rake, and future action on later streets — including the chance you face another bet. Pot odds are where the decision starts, not the whole decision.
