UTG (Under The Gun) refers to the player sitting immediately to the left of the big blind. This player acts first in the preflop betting round and must therefore commit to a decision without any information about the rest of the table. Because of this, the UTG opening range needs to be the tightest and strongest at the table, typically limited to premium hands that play well against a full field of opponents.
