The nuts is the strongest hand mathematically possible on a given board. Holding the nuts guarantees you cannot lose the pot outright — the worst that can happen is chopping it with another player who holds an identical hand. Players constantly track the "current nuts" as community cards appear, since the best possible holding changes street by street. Knowing the nuts helps you read boards, judge how scared opponents should be, and decide how heavily to value bet or slow-play.
